    What a joke!
There are not “whispering” about the x factor, it is a major part of TPI and all golf bio mechanics ..obviously mclean was misinterpreted because he says in the x factor that the hips should turn about 45 degees if you are getting a 90 degree shoulder turn, he absolutely does not there should be no hip turn .maybe you should read the book and not just look at the cover.
“the x factor, my opinion, should be in the downswing” This is called the x factor stretch, and is from jim mclean

I should have watched this vdo a few years ago. I fell into that X-trap and it really hurts my swing. When my hip is not turned on the backswing, it will outrace the upper body on the downswing, causing slice or push. A lot of compensation I put into my swing and they’re all a chunk of mess.
Your lesson makes me understand the swing real well and it is very sensible.

    Good Buy Jim McL.

    The video you want to see is the “Golf Pro lesson learn your golf machine” where I demonstrate how the anatomy of the human body works for the golf swing with our full size skeleton we have at our learning center;
The others are “golf pro lesson be a solid ball striker” and “golf pro lesson leg and footwork”; Shawn

Thank you again for such a great lesson and for teaching truths instead of myths. Jim M. definitely set me back years with the Xfactor garbage.

I tried it and your method makes it easier to get back to the ball. Maybe Tiger should consult you after Hank…more fairways hit right :) no reply needed thx….

This very much how most instructors teach these days and why golf is a major frustration for the vast majority; this is not what I teach though; what I teach is what was taught 100 years to 30 years ago before video became mainstream; Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Julius Boros, Gary Player, Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton, Walter Hagen and the list goes on and on…What I am doing is taking that line of thinking many levels deeper and it is helping my students way beyond the resistance stuff…Shawn

  7. bugynites09 says:

OK what i do is start the swing with my shoulders, my lower body follows and i FEEL resistance…my downswing starts with my legs or hips my arms follow. keeping my spine angle while I continue to turn lag is created, contact made and im through to a full finish…is this the same to what you are refering…..

    Hi Eric!
    Great question! Have her do the “Feet together drill” and perfect it till the cows come home; make it a part of her regular routine for warming up;
She need to be aware of 2 things; her connection to the ground and how gravity and centrifugal force TRACKS THE ARM-CLUB UNIT AND HOW THE BODY GETS OUT OF THE WAY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS.

Then, have her perfect the “Tilted Spiral” part 1, 2 and 3; what you do not want is to develop a resistant swing that will hide the arms behind her…

    Hi Shawn -
I have a 12 year old daughter who has been playing golf for about a year now. I ordered your video and we have both been working on your fundementals. Is it possible to have to much hip turn. A pro that she works with from time to time thinks she might be double jointed. Her hip turn is much more than 45 degress and her shoulder turn is probabley 120 degrees. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric

Thank you for the vote of confidence; indeed my plan of attack would have been very different; all we can do is keep plugging at what we enjoy and be thankful for what we have!
All the best to you! Shawn

thanks for this tip. it’s something i’d been struggling with in my swing. in my lessons with my pro, we’ve seen that if i let my hips turn back then i not only get the proper shoulder rotation, but i get even more differential (x factor at the top) than if i turned my shoulders against resisting hips. i hate the word ‘timing’ in discussing the golf swing, but this moves gives me better timing / rythm…. and power. thanks

  14. jcr1964 says:

You’re the man Shawn. I’m just so excited about my golf again after stumbling on to your videos. It just all seems so effortless now and I’m so relieved that it is permissable again to rotate my hips! Boy was I stuck on that one. John.

  15. clemshaw says:

Hey Gomboman! Great realization! Yes, the hips will clear before impact…Have a look at the following vids: “No Bones About it” “Be a Solid Ball Striker”, “Arms falling down plane”, “Hogan Power Move”, “Catapult Power”, “Feet together drill”…They are all on my website on the “you tube Shawn” page; Thanks for the great comment! Shawn

  16. gomboman says:

Great Video Shawn. I’ve tried to follow Hogan’s Five Fundamentals where you restrict the hip turn but it doesn’t work for me. I can generate much more club head speed following your method. Tour pros with superb flexibility (i.e. Anthony Kim etc.)are the exception.

When I try to restrict my hip turn I have a problem clearing my left side and my hips and shoulders are square at impact which results in a weak hit–for me. Do you advocate having the hips open at impact compared to the shoulders?

  17. clemshaw says:

    Thanks Massivo!
You definitely get it! Without the hips turning under the pelvis going back and through all you get are arms crashing into a body that cannot get out of the way…
A great way to not think about it and to get the right timing is in my “Perpetual Motion Drill” video as well as the “Golf Swing Medicine” and “Momentum Toss” videos…just a couple of references for those who will read this important comment of yours! :) Thanks again! Shawn

Hi Shawn – U r simply awesome! So much confusion out there and worst of all it’s caused by supposedly “professional” golf instructors. Have been watching ur videos over the past few months…had some great breakthrus…I come back to them and there’s always something new to learn. One comment I wanted to make IMHO I think it’s all about the hip turn! and the shoulders follow…
Ur knowledge of the game is amazing! – Please keep up the good work!

    genius

  20. LV4NYG says:

i kinda get it, but hogans book i’m reading now say to in fact minimize the hip turn so you have resistance between hips and shoulders. He says with a big hip turn there is no resistance. Wierd the hogan power move is on something he doesn’t advocate. but i love your videoa so i’ll look into it and read over hogans five fundamentals again. thanx for your time. Jay

  21. clemshaw says:

It is when a golfer tries to maximize the differential between the upper and lower body by resisting the hip turn in the backswing; no other sport uses this method and neither should golf; Other videos on the subject are “Hogan Power Move” and “Stacked and Complete”…You will find them on my website in the “You Tube Shawn” page…

  22. LV4NYG says:

    what is x factor?

  23. abbvt24 says:

Thanks for the quick reply. My tendency is to start with arms only and they quickly get stuck behind me. I’d really been struggling with the idea of the momentum toss, but after watching the videos a few more times and the takeaway part of the DVD I feel better about it. What felt good was to start small with some chips and short pitches to get a feel for the toss rather than jump into full speed swings. By using the swivel to start the swing it feels so much more effortless. Thanks again Shawn!

  24. clemshaw says:

    Great question and comment, Thanks!
My favorites are the one leg drill and the feet together drill because they force you to turn properly just to stay on your feet; using the butt as the counterweight!
Then make sure you feel like you are using the swivel of the butt to TOSS the arms wise into the backswing with no strain using the takeaway and starting the swing technique and fine tuning it with the “Momentum Toss” part 1 and 2 videos on You Tube.
    Shawn

  25. abbvt24 says:

Shawn, I have your DVD and have watched almost all of the youtube videos. This video very much applies to me, and I’m currently working on getting a complete turn (hips and shoulders) and keeping the arms in front. It’s very tough to overcome ingrained bad habits. What are your favorite thoughts or drills to work on this? Thanks so much!
