One of the best and most simple lessons ever, from the greatest player the game has ever known.

  2. coojofresh says:

Tiger , Jack, & maybe Jones Jr. are my favorite golfers ever, but i would have to give the best ever to Tiger is pressed & that has nothing much to do with my age (31) because before tiger i watched old Bobby Jones shows & watched Jack play.

The masters will probably feel the biggest impact. The us open rough is usually so thick that it doesn’t really matter if the grooves are square or v.

  4. emncaity says:

Ha…so true (re “first cut”). Lemme tell ya, if they don’t alter the length of the rough, and if the greens are as fast as usual, the Masters and the Open might be the two really true tests out there, since the PGA Tour doesn’t control the setup. Somebody ought to be ready to do a stat analysis to determine whether, and to what degree, accurate drivers are in the ascendancy this year and following years, esp. at those events.

  5. rw5791 says:

@emncaity ,but don’t forget you’re not allowed to say “rough” at the masters,it’s strictly the “first cut”. The v grooves are going to make the first cut actually mean something and if the greens stay dry this masters is going to be a blast,to watch.

  6. emncaity says:

…especially when I think about _real_ adversity, like Hogan getting his body crushed by a bus while trying to block his wife from the impact, and then coming back through all the pain and recovery to sit at the top of the game again.

That’s the nature of fandom these days…it’s fanboyism, in which the object of their adoration can be excused from anything, as long as he can shoot a basketball or hit a golf ball well.

  7. emncaity says:

I really wonder how much he’ll get heckled. I doubt the Tour would let much of that go on (via the security people at each event). If Kobe Bryant–who is at worst a rapist who got away with it, and at best an adulterer who bought off his wife–can have a huge fan base, I figure Tiger will come back much sooner than expected, and first tournament he wins they’ll be talking about all the “adversity” he “overcame.” That’s the point where I’ll be throwing up…

  8. emncaity says:

That’ll be something, all right–if the Tour doesn’t instruct the setup people at various tournaments to ease up on the rough, which is what I figure will happen. Can’t have the “these guys are GOOD” bunch looking like they’re human.

  9. rw5791 says:

without a square grooved iron you really need to keep it in the fairway.

  10. sretsam68 says:

Agreed. I read “The Match” recently and it only reinforces Hogan’s toughness. Also, it will be interesting to see how Tiger handles heckling – it will happen. Seems like Nicklaus handled the heckling by Arnie’s Army pretty well. If Tiger complained about cameras, just wait…IMO, Tiger should take the entire year off. However, he’s in love with himself and attaining the record of majors…nothing more, nothing less.

  11. emncaity says:

Aaaaand another thing: I totally agree with you about Hogan’s comeback and what kind of toughness it showed, but I’d point to Hogan’s background and his difficulty in the early years on tour as further evidence, too. Imagine a supremely talented but self-absorbed person such as Tiger, who had nothing to do in his life, ever, but play golf and get ready to be a champion, had the road paved for him, etc….imagine him coming out of the kind of early life Hogan had, and getting all the way to #1.

  12. emncaity says:

Also, re Hogan: I just want to punch people in the mouth when they excuse Tiger’s occasional boorishness (cursing, hostility, etc.) by talking about how “competitive” he is–as if Nicklaus, Hogan, Trevino, Watson, Snead, et al. just had no idea what “competitiveness” was until Tiger came along. What complete horseshit. What he lacks is self-control–which is why the current situation surprises me about as much as the sun coming up in the east.

  13. emncaity says:

They’re euphoric, alright–and goofy, and ridiculous, and completely absorbed in the axiomatic superiority of their own generation, which is an attitude you can observe in just about any adolescent.

You’ve got it right, I think. On skill and scoring alone, Tiger belongs in the top group. On what the game should and used to represent, he doesn’t–and whoever needs that explained lacks the ability to understand anyway. That’s fine with me. Not everybody is supposed to get it.

  14. sretsam68 says:

The non-golf fans are euphoric with the Tiger Woods hype. Yes, he’s a great player. And yes, he would beat Nicklaus on occasion. Yet, Nicklaus would outlast Tiger over time. Whoever doesn’t realize that doesn’t know much about the game nor do they have perspective. And whoever thinks Tiger is more mentally tough than Hogan after what Hogan went through vs. Tiger’s recent escapades and his ability to come back successfully, doesn’t have a clue, either.

  15. earthshine2k says:

well said about Hogan. there’s the great ‘what if?’ in the history of golf. How many would Hogan have won if not for the accident? we’ll never know. the thing about Nicklaus that stands out is his OVERALL record in Majors. 19 seconds – 73 top 10′s. That’s insane. Basically, he was a factor in every major championship he competed in. not only a factor, but gave himself a legit chance to win. that said, i can watch the slow motion section of the original Golf My Way for hours. Awesome!!

  16. emncaity says:

So says your completely uninformed and unsupported opinion. So what?

On the exceedingly rare occasions when another player hasn’t blown himself up, thrown up all over himself, etc., and where that player has hit him in the mouth, Tiger has trouble. Jack has no difficulty hitting Tiger in the mouth. Neither would Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Trevino, Watson, or a dozen others.

One of the greatest ever? Sure. But there is absolutely no basis for what you’re saying here.

  17. emncaity says:

Sure, you can’t get a perfect comparison, but you can get something close. The major variables are course conditioning (fast fairways, mostly perfect lies, and perfect greens, particularly); equipment (HUGE differences); what clubs are needed for approach shots (e.g., 8-iron instead of 1-iron for #15 at Augusta); the all-exempt-tour birdiefest mentality; and maybe a couple more. You’ll find that with minor sensible adjustments to account for these variables, scores haven’t gone down at all.

  18. emncaity says:

You’re right–there’s nobody out there with the competitive chops of guys like Nicklaus and Hogan had to beat. Tiger is a real throwback in that way, in terms of killer instinct and competitive fire. He’ll come back, and everybody will kiss his ass and talk about all the “adversity” he overcame. (For the record, “adversity” is what Ben Hogan overcame. And it wasn’t a “mistake” for Tiger to live his life as a serial adulterer, humiliating his family.)

  19. sretsam68 says:

Does Tiger have a few whores ready for him at Scioto or maybe a few “pushers”?

  20. chapter13bmw says:

Head to Head: Tiger kicks Jack’s fat behind all the way back to Scioto.

  21. earthshine2k says:

he probably did ruin his life, but he will pass Nicklaus. He only needs 5, and as everyone points out in this thread, he has no real competition. all he’ll have now is golf. i’ve lost respect for him as well, but strictly from a golf perspective, i expect him to win 8 more majors at least. i’m expecting another 2000 type season from him in the next few years. maybe not win the US Open by 15 shots, but double digit wins and multiple majors. nobody out there can touch him.

  22. thefightbeginswithu says:

    best ever

  23. thefightbeginswithu says:

    FACT AZBALDY5
    ernie els -dope
    sergio-cant putt
    harrington -good not great
who else mickelson ???? very good not great

  24. azbaldy5 says:

There may be more good players but NONE of them are as good as what jack had to beat.

  25. azbaldy5 says:

jack had to beat much tougher competition than woods, PALMER, PLAYER, WATSON, TREVINO, CASPER, these guys were MUCH BETTER than anyone woods ever faced !
